Hearing loss
When it comes to hearing loss, we’re experts. You may only just be beginning your journey with hearing loss—so here’s some information to help you.
About hearing services
We make sure you are happy and confident to interact with others, play, and explore the world.
Our program promotes the development of listening, language, communication and social skills, in spoken language, Auslan or a combination of both to best meet your child’s and your family’s needs. For children who are deaf or hard of hearing, it’s important to provide tailored opportunities for early learning. We give children quality support early in life to set the foundation for higher learning and critical life skills.
Early Intervention
Give your child the best start in life
Every child is unique and so are their development and learning needs. The NextSense early intervention team works closely with you, your family and your child’s healthcare professionals to build a program specifically designed for your child.
We’re focused on developing happy, confident children who can explore and interact with the world around them. We do this through evidence-based and goal-focused programs that work through each stage of your child’s development including listening, language, cognitive, gross and fine motor skills and play development.
This helps your child reach goals in their early years, build independence and participate fully in all aspects of daily life.
Learning through play
We know children learn best when they are having fun, so we help you and your child develop skills through play, integrating learning into your daily routine to ensure you and your family can support your child’s development at home.
You and your family are your child’s first and best teachers. Our program is designed to empower you and your family to support your child’s learning and development every day, at home and in the community.
What causes hearing loss?
Some people are born deaf or hard of hearing. For others, hearing loss may develop quickly, or over time. There’s no single cause of hearing loss—but here are a few:
— genetic conditions
— contracting particular types of infections during pregnancy
— craniofacial (the parts of the head that enclose the brain and face) abnormalities
— head trauma or damage to the eardrum
— exposure to loud noises – this can affect hearing gradually, or immediately in the case of an extremely loud burst of sound
— age-related hearing loss.
Different types of hearing loss and their levels
hearing loss is described according to which part of the ear is affected. Hearing loss can be:
— conductive hearing loss
— sensorineural hearing loss
— mixed hearing loss
— Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder
Hearing loss may be described as mild, moderate, severe or profound. In Australia, this is determined by the level of hearing loss:
— mild hearing loss (21dB to 40dB)
— moderate hearing loss (41dB to 70dB)
— severe hearing loss (71dB to 90dB)
— profound hearing loss (91dB or greater)
NextSense provides innovative and customised services aimed at breaking down barriers for children, adults and families of people with hearing loss.
Difference between deaf and hard of hearing?
Deafness is defined as having profound hearing loss, which implies very little or no hearing in one or both ears. You may have heard the term ‘Deaf’ in the context of a person, or a group of people with profound hearing loss. ‘Deaf’ is a cultural identity that describes a community of people who are deaf, their shared experiences and language.
Other people with hearing loss, who don’t identify as being deaf, may be described as being hard of hearing. This may be the case when their hearing loss increases over time, or their level of hearing loss is mild or moderate.
A person may identify as deaf or hard of hearing—it’s their choice.
