What is a cochlear implant

A hearing (cochlear) implant is a device that stimulates the hearing nerve, known as the cochlea or auditory nerve, to provide access to high-quality, more detailed sound.

Unlike hearing aids which amplify sound, cochlear implants provide direct access to the cochlea and bypasses the damaged parts of the inner

How cochlear
implants work

Cochlear implants use two parts: the surgically-implanted internal ‘cochlear implant’ and an external ‘sound processor’.

Step 1

The sound processor’s microphones pick up sound from the world around you. The sound processor turns this sound into digital signals which are detected by the implant under the skin. The sound processor is held in place with a small magnet. It comes in ‘on the ear’ and ‘off the ear’ styles and various colours.

Your journey cochlear
implant

1

Assessment

This stage includes assessments with expert health professionals such as audiologists and speech pathologists, to understand your hearing loss and listening and communication needs. This helps to determine if an implant is a suitable option for you.

2

Consultation

Once it’s determined that a cochlear implant is an option, you’ll meet with experts to answer your questions and equip you with the information you need to make the best decision. This can include consultations with NextSense specialists, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons, meeting cochlear implant recipients, and attending information sessions.

3

Surgery

Once you’ve made the decision to proceed, we’ll help you organise and prepare for your cochlear implantation procedure, performed at a public or private hospital by a NextSense ENT surgeon. Most people are able to go home the day after their surgery.

4

Switch-on

Your implant will be switched on by your NextSense audiologist, as soon as possible after surgery. While most people can hear some sound immediately, it can take time to interpret these sounds. We’ll be with you every step of the way to provide the care you need to achieve the best possible outcomes.

5

Ongoing care

Once your implant is switched on, we’ll continue to support you to meet your goals. This can include tuning your cochlear implant to your needs (mapping), helping you practice listening and communication, and communication therapy with our specialist team. Children and their families can also access early intervention and school support services to enhance development in their early years of life..

6

Support for life

Whenever and wherever you need us, we’re here for you-providing a lifetime of tailored support for both you and your family. This can include ongoing therapy and allied health services, regular assessments, after hours technical support, and access to technology upgrades.
