Our
mission
NextSense is a not-for-profit and registered NDIS provider that provides dedicated, innovative, and customised services aimed at breaking down barriers for children, adults and families of people with hearing or vision loss.
With the support of generous donations, NextSense provides vital support for children and adults, more cochlear implants than any other service in Australia, and is a world leader for research, technology and professional education in our field.
Who we are
NextSense has been breaking boundaries since 1860, when Thomas Pattison opened the very first school for deaf children in Sydney. And we’ve been expanding our services ever since.
Today, we deliver world-class education, cochlear implpant, allied health, therapy, research and clinical services to children, adults and their families across the country.
We’re committed to research and innovation; harnessing the latest technologies and new ways of thinking and educating the next generation to lead the way in hearing and vision services.
xAnd while a lot of things change over 160 years, there’s one thing that has always remained the same: our commitment to delivering the world’s best services for people of all ages – not just today, but for generations to come.

Governance
Good governance is essential to maintaining trust between NextSense and the communities we support, our donors and supporters, and funding authorities.
Our centre for innovation
The NextSense centre for innovation on the Macquarie University campus is open.
This centre represents a new era for hearing and vision loss in Australia.
Custom-designed for people with hearing and vision loss, our centre is a place to nurture, trial and share new ideas to drive better outcomes for people with hearing and vision loss.
A state-of-the-art, nationally and internationally significant social infrastructure project, it houses our national operations and a major centre for delivering hearing and vision loss health and disability services, education, and research.
Importantly, it is a focal point for connecting the rich expertise across our 20 sites, remote services, and research and education programs with what we learn from others to build insights that drive change.
A place for collaboration with colleagues across Macquarie University campus and beyond, it leverages the bench strength across multiple fields: service delivery, research, health, disability, education, government, and industry.
The powerful new research and practice partnerships that we form will help cement Australia as a world leader in hearing and vision loss and help build a more inclusive society. We will be a drawcard for leading thinkers and practitioners and demonstrate what best practice inclusive education could look like in the future.
Our new centre allows us to:
- Scale and refine our in-person and remote services to meet growing demand.
- Improve child and family access to much-needed early intervention services
- Connect more professionals and clients with our world-leading cochlear implant program and address the growing need for adult CI services
- Evolve our offering to educate the next generation of professionals in sensory disability.
- Combine world-leading knowledge with real-world expertise, bringing a valuable service delivery perspective to wider policy and practice conversations.
